ESS Get Trained FEMA Education Course OverviewContractors who complete this training will be eligible to be included in the Earthquake Soft Story (ESS) Contractor Directory. All ESS participating homeowners must use this Directory to select a contractor to complete their retrofit.

The goal of this Seismic Rehabilitation Training is to educate California-licensed contractors and design professionals about the seismic vulnerabilities of houses with living space over garage (LSOG) during an earthquake. Completing this training will help you learn to identify common seismic vulnerabilities, and learn about rehabilitation approaches and available guidelines.

This training was developed from FEMA P-1100 and funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). You can review the training below, but in order to take the quiz and complete training, and be added to the Contractor Directory, you must first Register.

Register in the Earthquake Soft Story Program

Licensed Design Professionals who register with one of the California Residential Mitigation Program (CRMP) retrofit programs (Earthquake Brace + Bolt [EBB] or ESS), and Contractors who are registered with EBB or ESS and complete the free ESS training, will be placed in an ESS searchable Directory. Homeowners must choose an ESS Directory Contractor to complete their ESS retrofit.

  • If you’re already registered as an Earthquake Brace + Bolt contractor, go straight to your Dashboard and complete the free ESS training. You do not need to register again.
  • New to our retrofit programs? Simply Register with us, and then complete our free ESS training.

The 2023 Earthquake Soft Story (ESS) homeowner registration is now closed, and homeowners throughout California who are selected to receive a grant will be looking for a contractor to complete their ESS seismic retrofit.

An ESS seismic retrofit strengthens single-family houses that have a living space over garage, or "soft story," that is susceptible to collapse during an earthquake unless retrofitted.
