Earthquake Brace + Bolt Retrofit Program
The California Residential Mitigation Program's Earthquake Brace + Bolt program (EBB) is an incentive program that provides eligible California homeowners up to $3,000 toward a residential seismic retrofit.
The purpose is to help homeowners lessen the potential for damage to their houses during an earthquake by "bracing" the crawl space, when necessary, and "bolting" the foundation to the house's frame. This helps prevent the house from sliding or toppling off of its foundation during an earthquake.
You may be eligible for an EBB seismic retrofit grant if your house:
- Is located within program-eligible ZIP Codes;
- Was built before 1980 (but qualifying houses are more commonly built before 1940);
- Has a raised foundation;
- Sits on level ground or a low slope; and
- Has wood-framed walls (called cripple walls) in the crawl space under the first floor.
Supplemental Grant for Income-eligible Homeowners
In addition to the funding described above, EBB is also offering a supplemental grant to help income-eligible homeowners (homeowners with a verified annual income of $72,080 or less), complete a seismic retrofit. The Supplemental Grant will provide eligible homeowners grants (until grant funds run out) that may cover up to 100% of their retrofit costs.
